JEFF'S EXCELLENT GALENA ADVENTURE, JULY 2, 2006

This morning I took off to do more back roads, hoping to go around Rochford. But I wound up doing the backroads along the way instead. I went on 151, 155 and almost all the sideroads off of those. I wound up on Nemo road when it started raining. So I waited under some trees until it quit, then went to Brownsville for food. It started to rain again there after a while, so I decided to race the rain cell home. It was dry in front of the storm, so that was no problem.

Along the road, a ptarmagin, or whatever this bird is, was sitting right on the road. I took it's photo, then noticed it had about 5 chicks in the grass who were stealthily going toward the woods. The mom apparently was just trying to keep my attention so the chicks could get away. At one point I tried to follow to get a pic of the chicks, but then the mom sort of charged me, so I left them alone.

I read one of Gammy's books on Galena, then rode my bike a bit. I passed an SUV stopped on the road and asked the guy if he was lost. He was just taking photos, but asked where the cemetery was. I gave him general directions, then when I got back home I checked to see if he'd found the place. He was just getting up there. So we gabbed for a while, then on the way back down, John was talking to a guy who had worked at the mine shaft by Koppos. So we all chatted a while.

Tonight I'm supposed to be doing some online research for a friend, so I'll go do that now.
